Eyes Closed explores the quiet space that becomes available when the outside world no longer demands our attention.
The work emerged from a period of movement, emotional intensity, connection, and constant engagement with what was happening around me. I found myself drawn toward the opposite of all that activity: stillness, silence, and the subtle experience of simply being present.
Closing my eyes became a way of entering that space.
Rather than removing me from the world, it brought me closer to what was happening within me. Sensations became more pronounced. Sound, light, memory, and emotion seemed to move differently when there was nothing visual asking to be interpreted.
I wanted the painting to hold that particular state of awareness.
The horizon dissolves softly into the surrounding atmosphere, while the surface of the water carries layers of muted movement. Nothing is sharply defined. There is no obvious focal point competing for attention. The composition leaves room for the viewer to slow down and inhabit the space rather than simply look at it.
The softness of the sky and the restrained palette create a feeling of suspension, while the darker waters bring depth beneath that apparent calm. The distant birds introduce a subtle sense of life and movement without disturbing the quiet of the scene.
For me, the painting became a reflection on presence and the relationship between solitude and connection.
We can spend time with people we love, experience laughter, affection, conversation and shared moments, and still need to return to ourselves afterward. Not because those experiences are lacking, but because there is a different kind of knowing that can only emerge in quiet.
Eyes Closed is about that return.
