The Alchemy of Creation was born from a question I have often encountered in conversations about art: must an artist suffer in order to create?
For a long time, pain has been romanticized as part of the creative process, as though something beautiful must first be broken in order to be made. This work begins somewhere else. It asks what happens when pain is no longer something that defines the artist, but something that can be transformed.
In this painting, I explore creation as an act of alchemy. The things we carry, the emotions we cannot always articulate, the experiences that once felt heavy, can move through us and emerge in another form.
Watercolor became part of that transformation for me. Water carries pigment, disperses it, softens it, allows one color to meet another and creates something that cannot always be completely controlled. The movement of the medium becomes part of the meaning.
The central form emerged as something both human and otherworldly. It feels suspended between becoming and becoming again, between what has been left behind and what is taking shape. It is not a representation of the wound itself, but of what can emerge after it.
There is also something deeply tender in this work. The poem speaks to that moment of welcoming what has been born from healing. Not denying what came before, but no longer being defined by it.
For me, The Alchemy of Creation is ultimately about transformation. About allowing what once lived as pain to move through poetry, through color, through gesture, and finally into something that can exist outside of me.
What began as something I carried became something I could create.
And in that process, creation became its own form of healing.
