Devenir explores the delicate space between love and selfhood.
The work was born from a reflection on what happens when becoming who we are requires us to move beyond the person others have imagined us to be.
For a long time, I believed that being loved meant learning how to fit. To be quiet when I wanted to speak, to hold things inside, to become what was expected of me. But there comes a moment when something within us begins to ask for space. Not necessarily to leave those we love, but to stop leaving ourselves.
This painting speaks to that moment of becoming.
The figure emerges within a vast, shifting landscape, surrounded by layers of blue, turquoise, orange, and light. There is a sense of movement throughout the composition, but also a feeling of suspension, as though the figure is standing between what has been and what is beginning to take shape.
I was interested in this tension between attachment and freedom, between the people who have shaped us and the person we ultimately become.
The colors carry both warmth and distance. The cooler tones create a sense of introspection, while the warmer horizon introduces another possibility: expansion, movement, a life that continues beyond what we have known.
For me, Devenir is not about rejecting where we come from. It is about understanding that love does not give another person ownership over who we become.
The accompanying poem and art film grew from this realization. It reflects on the complicated nature of love, family, boundaries, forgiveness, and the quiet responsibility of becoming oneself. It asks whether we can love someone deeply while allowing them to become who they are, even when that becoming takes them somewhere we did not expect.
I think becoming is rarely a single moment. It is something that happens gradually, through the choices we make, the boundaries we learn to establish, the parts of ourselves we reclaim, and the courage to remain connected to our own inner voice.
