Trees in Sea emerged from a meditation on connection, presence, and the quiet recognition of something within us that feels older than language.
In this work, I explore the relationship between the human body and the natural world, not as separate things, but as reflections of one another. The central form moves between what could be understood as a tree, a body, or something more elemental. It is intentionally open, allowing the viewer to encounter it through their own associations.
The surrounding water creates a sense of movement and stillness at once. Layers of watercolor move across the surface like waves, while the darker central form remains grounded within them. I was interested in that contrast: the movement around us and the stillness that can exist within us.
There is something about trees that has always felt deeply connected to our own existence. They grow through seasons, rooted yet constantly changing. They carry traces of what came before while continuing to reach toward what comes next.
The poem accompanying this work grew from that sense of recognition. It speaks to the relationship between the self and nature, between breath and movement, between what we observe outside ourselves and what we eventually recognize within.
For me, Trees in Sea is about remembering that connection.
The tree stands within us as much as we stand within the world around us. The boundary between the two becomes softer, until what is outside begins to feel like a reflection of what has always existed within.
The accompanying poem extends this experience through language, while the watercolor holds it through movement, texture, and atmosphere.
